Techie

I’m proud of myself Today.

I only accomplished a simple task, but it was something I never thought I could/would do, and by doing it I actually feel quite capable and empowered.

I work in IT and I’m usually proficient with software applications, but I’m not a techie or a hardware person: I never cared about fixing things like computers and machines in general and I always took for granted that it was other people’s job to do it …until now.

Two years ago I bought a laptop for my daughter so she could use it for school and since she would occasionally dabble with graphic design, I bought one with a dedicated graphic card. This actually would turn out to be quite the valuable feature as she’s into online gaming.

What I didn’t forecast in my initial assessment, was the memory capacity requirements in terms of RAM: the laptop came with a default 8Gb which I thought was good enough for my daughter’s needs.

Wrong.

For gaming, not only you do need sufficient storage capacity (which can be supplied by simply attaching an external SSD unit), but if you’re playing online games with high quality graphics, such as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, they will eat RAM like it’s their job (wait, maybe it actually is their job…).
