Is this a metaphor? (I just ask because I’m a poet, so I’m entitled, you know…)

That sinking feeling you get when, having drawn a hand of solitaire, all the aces are visible and you just know that’s as far as you’re going to get and there’s no point in playing the rest of the hand.
