…from way in the way back, in the far northern parts of Europe where winter meant long, cold nights. They brought an evergreen tree into their houses around this time of year to symbolize that there was still life in the world and Spring would come again eventually.

I was talking with an Irish friend recently and he said that Father Christmas (Santa) was preceded by the Celtic mythological Green Man.
Could it be that the Christmas tree has remained as a representation of the Green Man in syncretism with the new Santa Claus?
